There's no denying we here at TireKicker are big fans of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.  Since its introduction as a very early 2017 model in early 2016, we've been impressed by the handling and agility of this compact sedan...so much so that we've not even blinked at the $27,710 bottom line of a loaded Hyundai Elantra Limited or at the $25,010 tab for the 201-horsepower Elantra Sport.

But now, Hyundai's gone and done it...sweetening the deal with a best-of-most-worlds model called the Value Edition that starts with a low one-price-no-options-beyond-floormats number, then immediately carves four figures off of that with an "Elantra Value Edition Standard Equipment Discount".

So here's the deal.  You take the Elantra with the 2.0-liter, 147-horsepower four, the six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic, the three-setting drive mode select (eco, normal and sport), and then add blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, 18-inch wheels, a power sunroof, LED daytime running lights, heated outside mirrors and door approach lights, a six-speaker audio system with a seven-inch color display, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual automatic temperature control, auto defogger, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, automatic headlamp control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Homelink, a compass, power driver's seat with lumbar, heated front seats with a sliding armrest, auto-up driver's window, lighted vanity mirrors, front and rear door map pockets, a hands-free smart trunk, proximity key with pushbutton start, a compact spare tire and a full tank of gas on delivery.

That sounds like there's a big tab coming.  But the base price is $21,465.  And that instant standard equipment discount is $1,215, which gets you down to $20,250.  Our tester had carpeted floor mats ($125), so with that and $835 inland freight and handling, the bottom line is $21,210.

Let that sink in a second.  One of the best-handling compact sedans on the market today, with an EPA fuel economy estimate of 28 city/37 highway, and a boatload of equipment that includes some very nice things (audio system and sunroof being the most costly pair)....for $21,210.   The 2017 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition might be the most aptly-named special edition of a car in quite some time.
