Publisher's note: Normally, the cars you read about here at TireKicker are loaned to us by the press fleets of the various manufacturers for several days. Seven is typical.  Occasionally, we'll get a longer period of time, and sometimes it'll only be three or four days.  Our "30 Minutes With" series features cars we spent half an hour driving during the just-concluded Western Automotive Journalists Media Day in Monterey, California.

Needless to say, these are quick drives and brief impressions that we hope to be able to flesh out with a full review of the vehicle at some point in the near future.

Media Days is a driving program, with journalists taking cars from the staging area at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley over Laureles Grade and back or off-road on the acclaimed Land Rover Experience on the grounds of Quail Lodge.

My eighth drive of the day was the 2019 Range Rover HSE P400e.

The 2019 Range Rover HSE P400e is a blend of the expected and the unexpected.  It is absolutely a Range Rover---a luxury vehicle that is also a rugged SUV and somehow makes no compromises to achieve both.

The surprise comes in the P400e designation.  This Range Rover is a plug-in hybrid.

There's a lot going on here, but the short version is this:  You can go up to 31 miles on electric power alone before the 2019 Range Rover HSE P400e switches over to a combination of a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder and a 114-horsepower electric motor.   Combined output is 398 horsepower and 472 pounds per foot of torque which makes the P400e feel like it has a massive engine under the hood.

Theoretically (your mileage may vary), you could live 15 and a half miles from work, leave home with a full charge, not use a drop of gas nor emit a particle of pollution in your roundtrip commute, charge at home at night and repeat the cycle indefinitely.  Double that if you can charge at work.    And if you do use up the charge and slip into hybrid mode, the EPA estimates you'll see 28 miles per gallon on the highway, 24 in the city.  Again, your mileage may vary, but those are some very nice numbers for a vehicle of the Range Rover's size class.

Still.  Range Rover luxury, Range Rover off-road capability and the mix of sustainability and flexibility that only a plug-in hybrid can deliver.  That's a compelling package and why we think the 2019 Range Rover HSE P400e is a remarkable vehicle.
