The 2019 Jaguar F-Pace SVR. |
That weight is more than offset if you step up to the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, like our tester.
The 247-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder found under the hood of standard F-Paces is replaced by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making 550 horsepower. That's 126 more than the Maserati Levante S GranSport we reviewed in October. And it translates to (according to Jaguar) 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, the quarter-mile in 12.3 and a top speed of 176 miles per hour.
That's connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission with gearshift paddles and all-wheel drive, resulting in an EPA fuel economy estimate of 16 mpg city/21 highway---respectable given the sheer power involved.
All that demands some serious stopping and handling power as well, so the F-Pace SVR gets upgraded brakes with painted calipers, an electronic active differential with torque vectoring by braking, Jaguar DriveControl with selectable driving modes, all surface progress control, and adaptive dynamics. And it all rides on standard 21-inch wheels.
Starting price is $79,990, which undercuts not only the Maserati (by more than $10,000) but also the Porsche Cayenne Turbo (by more than $40,000). The Mercedes-Benz AMC GLC 63 is more than $6,000 less than the Jag, but it also carries 71 fewer horsepower.

If you had said "Jaguar SUV" to me ten years ago, I'd have said it was heresy. But the F-Pace SVR is proof that the concept can work---and hopefully, help Jaguar pay for the next generations of the more classic sports cars---roadsters, coupes----on which the company built its reputation.
